IELTS Test Format

The IELTS Listening part of the test assesses your ability to understand spoken English across both everyday social and educational or professional contexts. It lasts 30 minutes and features a range of tasks designed to test various listening skills:
  1. Duration: 30 minutes (along with 10 minutes transfer time for paper-based tests only)
  2. Overview: Listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then answer the questions based on these recordings.
    Recording 1: A conversation or dialogue between two people in a social context.
    Recording 2: A monologue in a social environment or setting (e.g., a speech about local facilities).
    Recording 3: A conversation between two or more speakers (typically two to three) in an educational or professional context, such as university students in discussion.
    Recording 4: A monologue on an academic topic.
  3. Skills Assessed: Understanding main ideas, detailed information, opinions, attitudes and the ability to follow the development of an argument.
The IELTS Reading section evaluates your capacity to understand and interpret written English across a range of contexts, which differ depending on whether you are taking the General Training or Academic test. It lasts 60 minutes and features several tasks:
  1. Duration: 60 minutes.
  2. Overview: 
    • Academic IELTS: The Reading test includes three long passages. These may be descriptive, factual, analytical, or discursive. Texts are sourced from books, journals, newspapers and magazines.
    • General Training IELTS: Three sections, with short everyday and workplace texts in Sections 1–2 and one longer text in Section 3. Texts include extracts from advertisements, guidelines, notices, or workplace documents.
  3. Skills Assessed: Ability to skim, scan and understand the main ideas, logical arguments and specific details.
The Writing part of the IELTS test assesses your capability to produce clear and coherent written English. The tasks differ depending on whether you are taking the Academic or General Training test:  
  1. Duration: 60 minutes.
  2. Overview: The Writing test consists of two tasks:
    • Task 1:
      • Academic: Describe visual information (a graph, chart, table, or diagram) in at least 150 words.
      • General Training: Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) in at least 150 words.
    • Task 2:
      Write an essay in answer or response to a specific point of view, problem or argument in at least 250 words.
  3. Skills Assessed: Ability to organise ideas, use appropriate vocabulary and grammar and respond coherently to specific tasks.
The IELTS Speaking section measures your proficiency in communicating effectively in English, spanning approximately 11 to 14 minutes. It encompasses several tasks designed to assess various facets of your speaking abilities:
  1. Duration: 11–14 minutes.
  2. Overview: The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with an examiner and includes three parts:
    • Part 1 (Introduction and Interview): You will answer questions about yourself, your home, family, work, studies and interests.
    • Part 2 (Long Turn): You will be provided a cue card along with a topic and you will have 1 minute to prepare. You’ll then speak for 1–2 minutes.
    • Part 3 (Discussion): You’ll discuss more abstract ideas related to the topic from Part 2.
  3. Skills Assessed: Fluency, coherence, lexical resource, grammatical accuracy and pronunciation.

Understanding IELTS General

IELTS General Training assesses English skills for everyday life, work and migration. It focuses on practical communication in social and workplace contexts.

Reading

IELTS General Training Reading has 3 sections with 40 questions. Texts come from everyday sources like ads, notices, books, newspapers, handbooks, etc.

Writing

  • Task 1: Writing a letter in answer to a specific situation.
  • Task 2: Writing an essay responding to a point of view, argument or problem.
  • Task 3: Requires writing an essay on a general topic, focusing on clear communication of ideas in a practical context.

Listening

IELTS General Training Listening tests the ability to understand everyday spoken English through four recordings with 40 questions completed in one sitting.

Reading

IELTS Academic Reading includes 3 long passages with 40 questions in total. Texts are taken from journals, magazines, books and newspapers for non-specialist readers suitable for academic study. It assesses understanding of main ideas, details, opinions and implied meaning overall.

Writing

IELTS Academic Writing assesses the ability to write clearly in 60 minutes with two tasks: visual data description and essay writing as per the IELTS test format.
